As a lyricist, Steven has collaborated on songs recorded by Melanie Doane. Eleven of his poems were used as the text for the song cycle Disordered Songs by Winnipeg composer David R. Scott. This was the commissioned work for the 2005 Eckhardt-Gramatté Vocal Competition. He also contributed lyrics to the dance show Swingstep, for which he was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award.
An early portion of a novel-in-progress, under the working title Mariasse won the 2003 David Adams Richards Prize presented by the Writers' Federation of New Brunswick. In 2008 the finished draft of this manuscript, renamed Destinations and Departures, was chosen out of 5,000 entries to be a Top-100 Semi-finalist in the Amazon.com Breakout Novel Award. Steven is currently revising the manuscript, which will have a new (as yet undecided) title.
Steven is a proud member of The Writers' Union of Canada, The PEI Writers' Guild, PEN Canada, The Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts, and The Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia.
His debut story collection, Fatted Calf Blues, was published by Turnstone Press in April 2009. There is a Fatted Calf Blues Facebook group.
Steven thanks the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts
